Smartmouth private eye Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson in full-on devil may care mode) realizes he doesn’t know the half of it when he takes on a Los Angeles case about the city’s rich and its water supply. When he falls for mysterious Evelyn Cross-Mulray (a note perfect Faye Dunaway), he realizes there are horrors worse than guns when he meets her father, a towering John Huston as Noah Cross.

Directed by Roman Polanski, written by Robert Towne, Chinatown somehow captured the paranoia of the 1970’s in an impeccable genre film about LA in the 1930’s.

The movie also plays with real-life fire as the moviemakers used details of Nicholson’s own personal life in some of the key twists and reveals that catapult the movie into its devastating third act.

One of the key LA noirs of all time.

We continue our LA Loves Movies 35mm marathon with a stone-cold classic. There are four more to come. . .(If you'd like to attend part or all of the day, make sure you get an all-day pass and save money).

Finally, if you’d like to support Secret Movie Club and its mission to nurture, support, and exhibit amazing movies and narrative storytelling work from everyone from celebrated masters to dynamic world voices to emerging local young filmmakers, please email us at community@secretmovieclub.com . We can discuss exciting and substantial ways you can support and be part of the journey. We’re planning special series, festivals, workshops, Q&As, premieres, and more in our 2025-2026 season which we aim to make our biggest season of cinema yet.

Secret Movie Club is here to help write the next chapter of cinema.
