Kaiju Colossus Labor Day weekend Marathon

Sunday, August 31, 2025, Million Dollar Theater

Some of the greatest kaiju movies of the 90’s and 00’s including the entire 90’s GAMERA trilogy and Godzilla v Destoroyah (1995) and Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001)-on 35mm.

10a Gamera 1: Guardian of the Universe (1995) DCP In what is often considered the best kaiju trilogy of the 1990’s, Gamera, a giant turtle with a psychic bond to Asagi, a little girl (just go with it), comes to battle Gyaos, an ever changing bird monster. The Japanese government at first think Gamera is the threat. But damn it, he’s here to help! Mind blowing special effects.

1230p Gamera 2: Attack of Legion (1996) DCP New day, new alien monsters/problems for giant turtle Gamera, our defender of the earth. A hive-like alien creature spawned by one bad-ass Queen (James Cameron’s ALIENS has got nothing on the reproducing powers of this alien B) attacks Japan. Psychic Asagi, now a teenager, again bonds with Gamera to save the earth. The effects and chaos reach mind-boggling levels in a sequel even better than the first movie.

3p Gamera: Revenge of Iris (1999) DCP Things get crazy dark and epic in this finale to the 90’s Gamera trilogy when a young girl Ayana forms a psychic bond with the bad kaiju Iris who feeds on hatred of our hero, giant turtle Gamera. Asagi and her Mom return to provide cosmic psychic balance and support to the kaiju turtle who protects us all. Special effects and psychological intensity dominate this final movie so mind-blowing nobody really knew what to do with Gamera for 24 years afterwards.

6p Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) digital presentation The last Heisei Godzilla from Toho before the Millenium phase, Godzilla vs Destoroyah may be the absolute pinnacle of Godzilla Kaiju moviemaking in the practical effects era. No kaiju baddie before holds a candle to the intense burn it all to the ground no holds barred rage match that erupts between Godzilla (who has a child in this one!) and Destoroyah who seems invincible. Possibly the most heavy metal of all Godzillas.

845p Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001) 35mm Gamera director Shusuke Kaneko joins the Godzilla franchise to show everyone how it’s done. And Toho gave him the ultimate challenge: pit the most famous kaijus of the series-Godzilla, Mothra, Baragon, King Ghidorah against each other in 21st century Japan. Maybe everyone knew the era of practical effects were coming to an end so they went all out. Often considered one of the very best of the entire series.

*Come to 1, 2, or come to all. Get the day-long pass, save money, enjoy breakfast lunch dinner at next door's historic Grand Central Market.
