Los Angeles Loves Movies 35mm Marathon
Saturday, August 23, 2025, Million Dollar Theater
Masterpiece LA movies. Let's celebrate & show this city love!
10a Sunset Boulevard (1950) 35mm The acidic Billy Wilder classic. Struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis (an impossibly beautiful William Holden) gigolos for has been movie star Norma Desmond (a towering performance by Gloria Swanson). Hollywood Babylon and one of the inspirations for David Lynch’s 2001 Mulholland Drive.
1245p Chinatown (1974) 35mm Smartmouth private eye Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson in full-on devil may care mode) realizes he doesn’t know the half of it when he takes on a Los Angeles case about the city’s rich and its water supply. When he falls for mysterious Evelyn Cross-Mulray (a note perfect Faye Dunaway), he realizes there are horrors worse than guns when he meets her father, a towering John Huston as Noah Cross. Directed by Roman Polanski, one of the key LA noirs of all time.
345p Shampoo (1975) 35mm Warren Beatty, screenwriter Robert Townsend, and director Hal Ashby may have made THE essential movie about Americans relationships to their politics and disguised it as a mid-70’s sex romp comedy in sunny Los Angeles. Womanizing hairdresser George juggles affairs and his own dissatisfaction with his life without realizing he and everyone around him by being so self-absorbed are complicit in helping re-elect Richard Nixon to a second term as president of the United States.
630p Jackie Brown (1997) 35mm Possibly Quentin Tarantino’s greatest movie. Pam Grier is the queen and owns every scene as stewardess Jackie Brown who must try to outthink all the men around her to get her hands on several hundred thousand dollars and away from murderous crime boss Ordell (Sam Jackson). Based on Elmore Leonard’s Rum Punch, Jackie Brown is a quintessential real LA movie and boasts incredible performances by Robert De Niro, Robert Foerster, Bridget Fonda, Chris Tucker, Michael Keaton.
945p Drive (2011) 35mm Ryan Gosling and bad boy European auteur Nicholas Winding Refn may have made the best 21st century movie about Los Angeles when they banded together to make this neon and synthesizer drenched violent noir about a stunt man and getaway driver who falls in love with his apartment neighbor Irene (a wonderful Carey Mulligan) and her son, only to have her criminal husband Standard (Oscar Isaac, owning it) return and rope Driver into a crime that is going to explode in everyone’s face.
*Come to 1, 2, or come to all. Get the day-long pass, save money, enjoy breakfast lunch dinner at next door's historic Grand Central Market.
