Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

As we approach the holidays, it's important to us to show some of the greatest holiday movies of all time from around the world. One of the greatest is Ingmar Bergman's Fanny & Alexander.

Bergman tells a story-part fiction, part very clear autobiography-of siblings Fanny & Alexander who go from the warm, boisterous holiday parties and theater productions of their early youth to a disastrous time with a strict minister stepfather (after the death of their beloved theater owning father). All the while, they never lose their love for each other, their family, or their vivid imaginations.

Bergman, like Kurosawa would with Ran just a few years later, let everyone know he intended this work to be a summation piece and his final feature film. Though Bergman would go on to do other TV works and even one more feature (Saraband, a kind of sequel to his Scenes from a Marriage), Fanny and Alexander takes many of his lifelong obsessions-the theater, God, family, youth, memory-and weaves them into a spell-binding all time classic.

Opening at a holiday party at Fanny & Alexander's beloved grandmother's, introducing almost all the main players, Fanny & Alexander shows Bergman and his collaborators-most notably cinematographer Sven Nykvist-at the height of their powers giving everything.

The shortened feature version takes so much out of the story that much of the meaning of Bergman's intent was obscured or lost (though the feature version is still very strong). We want to correct that tonight.

This movie is a joy and a holiday gift for all. Come enjoy one of the greatest works by one of the greatest masters of cinema the world has ever known.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
