Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

This programmer's mother would often regale him with tales of the wild children's shows that happened in the San Fernando Valley in the 1950's of her early childhood. Sci-double features. Shouting children. Music. Pure life!

We want to bring back some of that Children's Matinee magic with a double feature of two family classics Brad Bird's The Iron Giant and the all-time great Disney 1964 Mary Poppins. Both on 35mm prints!

And in between we'll be doing a 30 minute magic show with real live magicians onstage for the kids! Because. . .why not?! Movies are magic.

First up, Brad Bird's 1999 traditionally drawn animation (with some computer assistance) The Iron Giant adapted from the famous British children's novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

One of those great miracles of a family movie that only gets better over the years, The Iron Giant takes place during the Cold War when a 50 foot robot crash lands into a small town and into the life of 9 year old Hogarth Hughes.

Hogarth and the Robot bond but of course there are military interests on the trail of the Robot. Hogarth and the Robot try to find a way to escape the clutches of the reactionary, paranoid adults while preserving their friendship.

One of those rare children's movies that works completely on two levels: one for children and one for the parent, The Iron Giant is the kind of movie that would have made the Walt Disney of Snow White and Fantasia proud. And in fact, Brad Bird would next go on to make several of Pixar-Disney's greatest movies: The Incredibles 1 & 2 and Ratatouille.

Then we will move immediately into a 30 minute magic show live on stage. There may be audience participation as magicians offer up some holiday wonder and mischief.

Then, after a 40 minute intermission, we return with one of the last triumphs of Walt Disney's career Mary Poppins.

Mary Poppins is the joyous musical written by the world famous Sherman Brothers and adapted from the books by P.L. Travers. The Banks children have stuffy parents and rather frustratingly stuffy lives until new nanny Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) literally flies in from the sky to take over the household.

Mary Poppins soon reveals herself to be possessed of great magic and she takes the kids on a series of adventures including an animated wonderland with her friend, the chimney sweep Burt (Dick Van Dyke).

Soon Mary Poppins' magic is felt by all in the family. This is the movie Disney poured his heart and soul into to prove he could make just as magical live action movies as animated movies. Mary Poppins proved him right going on to become the biggest hit of the year and racking up 13 Academy Award nominations.

Just the kind of movie that proves "a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down". Join us for two wonderful family classics. Full of magic. With some magic in between.

All on 35mm film in a movie palace.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
