10a BARBARELLA (1968) 35mm The late 60's were a pretty crazy time. The world was on fire with protest, war, unrest. And yet creativity and the arts were heading into psychedlic, mind-melting (often drug induced) new territories of visual, sexual, musical expression. It's not that the movies or works were always great. But they still stand as wildly entertaining communiques from a swinging and experimental time. See Exhibit A: Jane Fonda's & Roger Vadim's sci-fi comedy WTF movie Barbarella. Celebrity couple Vadim and Fonda wanted to work together and choose this sci-fi comic to adapt in wild color. Fonda's Barbarella is a space traveller and rep for the Earth who must travel to some pretty amazingly production designed spaceships and planets to stop a weapon from being used to end humanity. Along the way she meets an angel , gets trapped in a labyrinth, makes a sex machine explode (you gotta see the movie). Watch all this 60's grooviness on an archive 35mm print.
1p DANGER: DIABOLIK (1968) 35mm Shot back to back with Barbarella, both movies produced by Dino De Laurentis, Danger: Diabolik is Italian giallo and horror auteur Mario Bava's answer to James Bond. Only crazier. More hilarious. And more Euro-swinging.
Based on Italian comics just as BARBARELLA was based on English comics, Danger: DIabolik follows master thief Diabolik (John Phillip Law who also stars in Barbarella), his lover Eva, and Detective Ginko (art cinema star Michel Piccoli slightly confused to be in this kind of movie) in a game of cat & mouse over $10 million that Diabolik and Eva have stolen. The only movie that could rival Barbarella's crazy sets and set pieces, Danger Diabolik has so many Bava touches and so many amazing sets, sequences, camerawork that both Diabolik and Barbarella became pop culture touchstones that inspired countless musicians, moviemakers, artists in the decades to come.
Sometimes movies can just be goofy, wild, campy, over the top, delirious, and joyous. Just like the holidays themselves.
Join us for this incredible psychedelic double feature that doubles as our 2025 holiday party!
