7:30pm PAPRIKA (2006, dir. Satoshi Kon, Sony Pictures Classics, Japan, 90mns, 35mm - Japanese w/ English subtitles)

Anime master of the dark, human, and mysterious Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers) turned in one of his most daring, strange, and imaginative movies with his final feature: Paprika.

Often cited as a potential influence on Inception, Paprika finds us in the near future where a new device “the DC mini” allows people to view other people’s dreams. The problem is there are no restrictions to access and so anyone can enter anyone else’s dreams.

Even Doctor Chiba (who goes by the moniker “Paprika” in the dream world) uses the machine against the rules to help psychiatric patients. Chaos, paranoia, and the unexplainable all merge as different people try to either exploit or suppress the machine.

Kon’s later period works (he sadly died prematurely in 2010) focused more and more on the danger, excitement, unpredictability of the human mind itself. His limited television series Paranoia Agent explored the subjectivity of human memory. Here Kon dares to take on our very dreams-the most unexplainable phenomena of human existence.

Whereas master anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki often uses myth, legend, fairy tale as the vehicle for his stories, Kon instead uses animation as a surprisingly adult tool of psychological exploration. In some ways, Kon is the “Bergman” of Japanese anime.

Join us for the rare chance to see this incredible indescribable work of speculative anime science fiction. On 35mm! In a theater.

Best always,
