SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER: Comic book artist and creator Mike Mignola as well as documentary filmmakers Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna (makers of the Mignola documentary MIKE MIGNOLA: DRAWING MONSTERS which we are also screening) join us for a Q&A about Mr. Mignola's process, his love of cinema, and thoughts on the intersection of comics, art, and cinema following the two movies!
PLUS Mr. Mignola and colorist Dave Stewart have created a limited edition poster JUST FOR THIS EVENT! We will have at least 75 posters available via raffle for purchase ($60 for poster) at the event.

IMPORTANT UPDATE NOTE: This event is re-scheduled from its original August 13, 2022 date. Because of the move to October, the originally planned Bride of Frankenstein is out of release. Universal has kindly though allowed us to show the original Frankenstein on 35mm. So same director, same cast, the origin story!
Tonight, we're proud and excited to continue our 2022 Summer Speaker series at the Million Dollar Theater with a double feature of the 1931 Universal horror classic Frankenstein on 35mm and the brand spanking new documentary MIKE MIGNOLA DRAWING MONSTERS followed by a Q&A with comic book creator/artist Mr. Mignola (Hellboy) and documentarians Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna in person.
First up, we screen the original 1931 James Whale pre-code Universal Monster movie classic Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff. . .on a 35mm print.
Along with the Todd Browning directed, Bela Lugosi starring Dracula, which came out the same year, Frankenstein scared the pants off the public and created an insatiable urge for monsters, great tortured performances, amazing filmmaking, and mind blowing special effects.
Inspired by the Mary Shelley novel (though departing from it quite significantly), Frankenstein tells the story of scientist Henry Frankenstein who, along with the help of his assistant Fritz, experiment and succeed in bringing life to a corpse made out of bodies and brains stolen from graves. But what they didn't anticipate is that Frankenstein's Monster (Karloff) would have desires, fears, wants, needs of his own.
Since he is after all now a living human being. But one traumatized by a return from death and an abnormal brain.
Though we see that Frankenstein's Monster is, on some level, like a large abandoned child, we also see the horror, panic, and hysteria of the townspeople when they find out about his existence.
It is really this movie, more so than Shelley's novel, that set up all the iconography we now associate with the story. And the famous "It's alive! Alive!" scene has been quoted and memorialized in countless works of pop art.
Director James Whale also created here and in his follow-up Bride of Frankenstein a perceptive parable of how "normal" people treat something "abnormal".
Mr. Mignola has singled out the Frankenstein movies of the original Universal Monster horror cycle as having a deep and profound influence on his life and art.
We follow this up with the new documentary MIKE MIGNOLA DRAWING MONSTERS. When Mike Mignola created Hellboy, he unleashed a visionary comic book character and launched an entire universe populated by unique heroes and creatures, misfits and monsters. Featuring in-depth interviews with Mignola alongside appearances from the likes of Patton Oswalt, Guillermo del Toro, Neil Gaiman, Rebecca Sugar and Victor LaValle, Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is a film for fans of the Hellboy universe and the Hellboy movies, but more than this, it’s a film for anyone interested in creativity and the imagination.
And finally, Mr. Mignola himself joins us along with the doc filmmakers to talk about his life, his art, comic books, cinema, and to answer any questions you might have!
