SPECIAL NOTE: This is the premiere of a brand-new live orchestral score by the Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble commissioned especially for Secret Movie Club.

We are extremely excited to return to the Million Dollar Theater Movie Palace with a brand new original live orchestral score by the Jack Curtis Dubowksy ensemble commissioned specifically for Secret Movie Club to accompany Alfred Hitchcock's very first breakout hit, the silent film classic stunner THE LODGER (1927).

This is a rare opportunity to see Hitchcock's rarely screened earliest masterpiece with a live orchestral score in a movie palace JUST as it would have been experienced in 1927.

This was Hitch's third feature (he was only 28 years old!) but it was the first movie Hitchcock felt he really got to show his talent. The story focuses on a new "lodger" in a boarding house who may or may not be the infamous Jack The Ripper serial killer, murdering innocent women in the London fog! He acts so mysteriously that all those around him whip themselves into fear and hysteria trying to figure out his true identity.

It's all here, even before the advent of sound. Hitchcock employs all manner of avant-garde visionary camera techniques here (including a great cinematic solution to conveying sound in the silent era) to create, develop, and sublimate tension and suspense.

Ironically, the studio heads at the time didn't know what to make of the movie and shelved it for months. Hitchcock was devastated as he felt sure it was a hit and would be his ticket to a lifetime career in cinema. But as Hitchcock said years later, the delay taught him an extremely important lesson that it's one of God's greatest gifts that we don't know the future.

Hitch was humbled and hardened by the wait. But then a changing of the studio guard and a need for material to put into theaters changed fortunes and THE LODGER was suddenly taken off the shelf and put into theaters. It was an instant hit (as Hitch suspected it would be). Many considered it the finest British movie ever made up that point.

It showcased all of Hitchcock's myriad talents and his bursting talent and ability to wield cinema as a tool of exuberant creativity.

Come and join us at Los Angeles's very first movie palace for one of Hitchcock's very first masterpieces. With a live original new score by the Jack Curtis Dubowsky ensemble!
