Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

David Cronenberg near defined the Body Horror subgenre with his blistering output of late 70's through early 90's movies examining our twisted, sexual, paranoid, conflicted relationships to our bodies, mutations, dying, transformation.

We're showing four of the very best culminating in his all time out and out masterpiece The Fly.

First up is They Came From Within/Shivers the movie that really put Cronenberg on the international map. Though he had made several features prior to Shivers, it was with this movie that Cronenberg hit his stride with a formula of horror, intelligence, unsettlingly well-crafted cinema that would launch him into the international stratosphere.

Shivers tells the story of a high rise condo/apartment complex that soon descends into wild sex, violence, depravity, mindlessness when a strange slug like creature begins to infect the residents and turn them into sex-zombies unable to control their impulses.

Cronenberg would riff again on this theme just 2 years later with Rabid starring famous adult actress Marilyn Chambers. Here though, Chambers, after a horrific accident (foreshadowing Crash) develops a strange phallic/clitoral stinger under her arm that feeds on the blood of others and turns them into zombies. Here the examination of casual sex, body horror, the morays of 70's adults explodes out of a contained condo and goes nutso across the country.

Cronenberg would make a stunning leap forward with his next picture The Brood which like many great works of art has its origins in Cronenberg's own personal trauma of a recent divorce. Here an estranged Husband comes to discover that a series of strange murders/attacks by deformed "children" may be traced back to a shady psychologist whose controversial techniques have even bewitched the Husband's own wife.

The climax of this movie is still one of the great, jaw dropping, you'll never get it out of your head no matter how hard you scrub horror whammies. And The Brood catapulted Cronenberg into his middle period of blisteringly intelligent yet delivering all the horror goodies you want success.

And so, we wrap up tonight with one of the (if not THE) best movies Cronenberg ever made: his 1986's remake of THE FLY. Powered by the twin career-high performances of Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, The Fly tells the story of a brilliant scientist who allows an ambitious journalist to document his testing of a new "molecular transporter" which will revolutionize the world.

But on a drunken night, thinking the journalist is sleeping with someone else, the scientist decides to test the transporter on himself. At first it appears an incredible success but slowly, horrifically, he discovers a FLY was in the transporter with him and his DNA and the Fly's DNA are merging to create something new. . .something horrible.

One of the great metaphors on disease and how it wrecks havoc on the body, The Fly is Cronenberg taking all his lessons of the 1970's/early 1980's and making an all time classic work.

Join us for these four Cronenberg classics. On 35mm. In a movie palace.

Best always,

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR OUR IN-DOOR THEATER SCREENINGS

REFUNDS:

We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime. Please request a refund through Eventbrite and we will process ASAP. After that, no refunds. Sorry.

However if something last minute comes up and you can’t make the screening, for whatever reason, just write us at: community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening.

WHY ARE THE TICKET PRICES HIGHER THAN NORMAL?

In order for us to re-open, maintain health protocols (which includes operating at only 50% capacity), and screen movies on 35MM, we need to temporarily raise our ticket prices. We apologize.

However, if you could look at this as partially helping Secret Movie Club re-open indoor theaters and 35MM film screening, we would be eternally grateful.

As we can increase capacity, we will IMMEDIATELY LOWER ticket prices.

If you could look at this as all of us being in this together, we WILL remember your kindness.

HELPFUL MILLION DOLLAR THEATER MOVIE PALACE PARKING TIPS:

If you are attending all movies on any given day (the double or triple feature), you can go to ADD ONS and pre-order an all day $6 Grand Central Parking Lot Pass. Folks just attending one feature can also park at this lot and as long as you grab food/drink from GCM you can get a 90 minute validation stamp that will help the cost of parking.

HOW WILL OUR STAFF MAKE SURE THE THEATER IS AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE:

We will have staff in the theater (on both the ground and balcony levels) at all times who make sure everyone is wearing masks and obeying protocols. We will have signage at entrance, markings at concessions, restrooms, etc so folks keep 6 ft distance at all times.

Anyone not observing safe protocols will kindly be asked to leave. On top of this, we’ll be making announcements at the head of each screening to make sure everyone understands the rules & regs!
