730p BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT (1982, dir by Ridley Scott, w/ Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Warner Brothers, 117mns, USA, Digital Presentation)

SPECIAL NOTE: We'll be throwing a kind of movie nerd party at the Million Dollar Theater, famous for being IN Blade Runner as the one identifiable movie theater in several key sequences. Come in costume. Bring your trivia. We'll have giveaways, contests, food, drink. And you can bring in dinner, drinks, etc from next door's historic Grand Central Market.

Get ready to party like it's 2019. Blade Runner may be famous in terms of futurism NOT for predicting where we would be in 2019 (alas no flying cars, colonies on Saturn's moons, androids hiding among us [yet]) but ironically in choosing the last year in which the world didn't seem on fire. From 2020 onwards, it has been COVID, geo-political instability, you name it.

But Ridley Scott's rightly celebrated sci-fi masterpiece starring a committed noir Harrison Ford as a "blade runner" or a detective who seeks out and kills rogue Androids in Los Angeles is still a movie that seems FROM the future. From Scott's visionary directing to the movie highmark sci-fi production design and cinematography, from the incredible acting by Rutger Hauer as the lead rebel android to Sean Young's turn as a vulnerable android femme fatale, from Vangelis's iconic synth score to the crazy vision of LA as a dystopic multi-cultural international nocturnal future noir dreamscape, Blade Runner is everything great cinema and great sci-fi aims to be. It builds a word and a dream and we float through it for two hours until we return to our own reality forever skewed just a little. Unable to see things as we saw them before.

Let's celebrate cinema, the Million Dollar Theater, Los Angeles, great sci-fi, and a movie that defines sci-fi Los Angeles noir like no other. It's a cinema party tonight.
