Part of our mission at Secret Movie Club is to look at cinema from 360 degrees. . .and never EVER be elitist or snobby. So we're doing an Evolution of Adam Sandler series to look at two of his earliest, most hilarious comedies and two of his more fascinating auteur director partnership complex roles.

Tonight, we go back to the beginning with two of the movies that made Adam Sandler a hero and beloved star to a whole generation of teenagers and young adults who were hungry for out and out comedy.

Happy Gilmore may be the rosetta stone for the Sandler man-child absurdist comedy. Sandler plays Gilmore, a failed NHL hockey player, who has to raise a whole bunch of money for his grandmother (in a nursing home run by a vicious Ben Stiller in a hilarious cameo) and discovers he has a killer golf swing (but his putting game sucks). A kind of Caddyshack meets Slapshot for the 1990's Gilmore helped put Sandler on the map.

We follow this up with Billy Madison another early Sandler comedy that found that sweet spot for Sandler to be both outrageous and sweet. When Billy's rich hotel owner father reveals that he paid for Billy's passing grades, Billy has to complete all 12 grades (2 weeks a grade) to prove to his father he has the chops to run the hotel business. Yes, high concept for sure. But what you could never expect are hilarious moments of near Dadaist absurdity like Billy's tendency to see a man-sized penguin whenever he gets drunk and a wonderful cameo from Chris Farley.

So join us to watch two great Sandler comedies on 35mm before we examine the other side of the coin on the next night with...

Best always,

Craig Hammill
